The city of Cairo, established as the political and administrative center for the Fatimid state in 358 AH, holds significant importance both as a pivotal city in the history of Egypt and North Africa and as one of the most important cultural and civilizational centers of the Islamic period among Islamic cities. The historical transformations of Cairo, evolving from a newly founded city exclusively for the ruling family, Fatimid statesmen, and soldiers to a vibrant urban center marked by social and commercial prosperity during the Fatimid period, are particularly noteworthy. According to the findings of this study, the history of Fatimid Cairo can be divided into two distinct phases: the period of initial growth and flourishing, and the later phase of development and expansion. The favorable location and the Fatimids' commitment to developing early Fatimid Cairo through the establishment of necessary urban structures and institutions transformed it into one of the key civilizational centers of the Islamic world at that time. Furthermore, despite a decline in the political power of the Fatimid rulers, the foundations of urban and civilizational excellence allowed for continued development in later periods under powerful and influential ministers, such that late Fatimid Cairo not only maintained its civilizational centrality but even enhanced it. These unique characteristics of Fatimid Cairo among cities in Egypt and North Africa laid the groundwork for its enduring significance in the post-Fatimid eras.
