This paper evaluates burial locations in major cities of Islamic Iran from the early Islamic period until the Mongol invasion, focusing on the main question of what influences guided people's choices in selecting these sites. The study aims to explore the practices and determining factors in the selection of burial locations, and to explain the impact of religious, traditional, social influences, and individual status on these choices. Through a review of local historical sources and biographical works as primary references, this research employs a qualitative, analytical-descriptive method to investigate burial patterns in Iranian society during this period. The findings reveal that ordinary people were buried in public cemeteries, while prominent figures, such as political and governmental leaders, as well as scholars, were interred in specific locations such as personal homes, schools, mosques, Sufi lodges, gardens, palaces, and government buildings. The analysis emphasizes that diverse factors, including religious beliefs, political and social issues, and class identity, influenced the selection of burial sites. Consequently, these findings enhance our understanding of the cultural and social structures prevailing in Iranian society during the studied era.
Keywords: Islamic Iran, burial, Islamic Iranian cemeteries, specialized tombs, graves of scholars and notable figures.
